One minute she’s gracing the red carpet with bright blue mermaid waves; the next, Helen Mirren faces the flashbulbs with a blunt-cut bob. At a screening in London for the upcoming film Golda, Mirren, who turned 78 this past July, looked luminous as she posed for photographers sporting a new trending haircut.
Styled with a deep side part and a flyaway-free finish, Mirren’s super-straight new silver cut grazed her shoulders and drew attention to her glowing, sun-kissed complexion. Mirren follows in the footsteps of a number of other celebrities, including Hailey Bieber, Emma Stone, and Soirse Ronan, in sporting a blunt bob right now. After all, the haircut is directional and makes a statement, especially when paired with chic tailoring on the red carpet.
The last couple of years have seen a surge in women who are over 50 experimenting with hairstyles that they may previously have avoided due to outdated “rules.” For example, cutting your hair short once you reach a “certain age” is no longer a thing, with everyone from Mirren to Demi Moore to Naomi Campbell showing off their super-long locks as of late. Women are also embracing their gray hair, choosing to celebrate rather than camouflage it. In fact, gray hair has become so popular that gray hair extensions are now in serious demand.
Mirren has played a big part in changing the way women think about aging. She likes to switch things up and be daring with her look, especially her hair color, and is always having fun on the red carpet. “I like to break my own rules as much as possible,” she previously told Vogue.
Out with the (stale) rules, in with having fun with our hair. As Helen Mirren proves, it looks great.
